Hip-hop & sample wizard Krewcial delivers a special full band afrobeat project for Heist
When you’ve been around as long as Krewcial – he released his first music long before Y2K – bridging genres become part of your natural flow. Over the course of his career, while remaining pretty underground, Krewcial has managed to build up quite an impressive resume. He has made waves in the Belgian hip-hop scene together with Lefto on Studio Brussels, released a solo album on BBE, went deep into a jazz project for Blue Note, runs a vinyl only soul-edit label and has delivered floor-stomping tracks for Lumberjacks in Hell, We Play House and G.A.M.M. So, it’s safe to say Krewcial’s palate is one that knows the tastes of the world.
It's therefor fitting that for Heist, he has gone deep into another corner of his sonic universe to work with a full live band of musicians and singers from Kenya, Nigeria and Argentina, to pay tribute to the rhythms and grooves of Africa.
The Motherland EP sees Krewcial and his collaborators explore different variations of African funk with an electronic edge. The moody and contemplative vocals on “Owo” discuss the meaning of true wealth, accompanied by an afrobeat groove so funky that Fela himself would very likely not have been able to sit still on.
“Wahala Dey” sees all kinds of West African influences come together for a loose-limbed groove with a bassline that’s funky as can be. “Kitoko” and “Ghana groove” are equally inspiring, full of rich percussive improvisation, funk-laden guitar licks and dusty horns, showcasing not just the songwriting talent of Krewcial, but also his talent to bring the right people together and simply have a great time recording music from the soul.
Yours Sincerely,
Maarten & Lars
